Growing Plant Pots
Growing plants require a few essentials such as adequate water, nutrients, light, and space. The first two can be bought and the third one can be achieved by placing the plant somewhere appropriate. Space means more than just some open area around the leaves. The roots under the soil are growing too! They need more living room as they get bigger. Changing pots is a routine that plant lovers need to do.
Changing pots can be quite a task. Consider how you have to carefully remove the plant from the old pot without damaging the roots. Either the soil is packed really tightly or the soil crumbles really easily.
Bike and Begum Ayaskan from Studio Ayaskan based in London created a plant pot, called Growth, that helps you avoid changing plant pots. The inspiration came from the concept that in nature, plants and their surroundings grow together. Usually plant pots are not part of this “natural flow.” Growth was designed with origami folds on the outside forming a tessellation of triangles. Triangles were used, because the Ayaskan twins calculated that triangles make the best cylinder. As the plant grows bigger, the roots push out more and more, pushing out the the plant pot’s folds too. When the triangles unfold, the pot expands in size. It can expand to more than five times its original size.
If you are interested in buying Growth, you’ll have to wait, because the Ayaskan twins are still discussing with manufacturers. Sign up for their mailing list for updates.
